 Week3  Back Next

The fertilized egg immediately begins to divide into a growing cluster of cells. Between five and seven days after ovulation, it starts to implant into the wall of the womb. It produces root-like outgrowths that help to attach it to the lining of the uterus. These cells will eventually grow into the placenta, the tube-like organ that connects mother to baby, and feeds and protects the baby until birth. Around week 3, when the cluster of cells is attaching to the lining of your womb, you might experience mild cramping and increased vaginal discharge. You might have some slight bleeding too, called implantation bleeding.

The blastocyst is growing and multiplying rapidly at this point. Part of the blastocyst will become the placenta, which will produce hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin). hCG is the pregnancy hormone that is detected by pregnancy tests.

Amniotic fluid is also now collecting around the cells that will protect and cushion your baby throughout your pregnancy. A lot of basic growth is occurring at this time, including the beginning development of the brain, spinal cord, and heart.

The embryo in your body is very small and actually looks more like a group of cells than a baby. It is the size of the head of a pin and approximately .006 inches long.

Remember that your baby is taking in everything that you do, avoid alcohol, illegal drugs, & certain foods.

Remember to take time to relax and enjoy being pregnant!
