 Week27  Back Next

Your baby is now 14 inches long and weighs 21⁄4 pounds.

Most of the systems of the body are formed by this stage, although the liver and lungs still have some way to develop.

You may begin to feel rhythmic movements in your uterus, it is likely that your baby is experiencing a hiccup, which is completely normal and may occur quite frequently during this last part of your pregnancy. This happens as your baby’s lungs continue to mature. Around this week babies will also begin to open and close their eyes. Your baby will have now developed a regular wake and sleep cycle…. Unfortunately, it may not be the same as yours!

Many women ask how often they should feel their baby move. Later in pregnancy you may be asked to calculate your baby’s kick count. If your baby seems less active than normal, then you should talk to your healthcare provider.

This week marks the beginning of the third trimester, and your antenatal classes should be starting soon. In most areas there will be a free local NHS class, as well as classes run by other organizations i.e National Childbirth Trust. Normally these classes will cover important topics such as labour, breathing techniques and positions for giving birth.
